Statistics on Orphans in Uganda
Despite the financial hardship many families are accustomed to accepting nieces, nephews, and extended children into their homes. This is common practice and shows the close knit family structures which exist. Some common problems are lack of resources for school, emotional, or transitioning into adulthood and financial independence.
Orphaned without family
Due to HIV/Aids alone 100,000 children become orphans each year. It is estimated that in total 270,000 Ugandan children are orphaned each year. Typical orphanages are strained to provide for their children beyond basic needs.
